In less than a week, the excitement of the World Cup will sweep across the globe.

For soccer fans like me, it’s the moment we’ve been waiting for all year. Here in Canada, the World Cup isn’t just a sporting event—it’s a celebration of multicultural pride. You can feel the buzz in the air: flags flutter on cars, neighbourhoods light up with vibrant colours, and communities come alive with celebration. There’s truly no better place to experience the thrill of the World Cup than in a nation as diverse and passionate as ours.

For the players, this tournament represents the pinnacle of their careers. As a former national team coach, I know the immense pressure and pride that comes with representing your country on the world stage. Standing on the pitch with fans cheering you on and millions watching from home, you feel the weight of every moment. It’s a ‘do or die’ scenario—one goal, one mistake--can make or break your career. The highs are exhilarating, bringing fame, fortune and new opportunities. The lows, however, can be devastating: a quiet bus ride home, a restless night; and sometimes, the uncertainty of what’s next.

How Do High Performers Manage Pressure?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned, both as a coach and as a competitor, is that everyone feels nerves. Sweaty palms, a racing heart, nausea—these are universal. The difference between good and great isn’t who feels nervous; it’s how they respond to those feelings. The very best performers aren’t immune to anxiety. Instead, they learn to manage it, channel it and use it to their advantage.

Managing nerves, anxiety and arousal is key to achieving peak performance—whether you’re an athlete, a coach or anyone facing a high-stakes moment. Elite performers recognize that how they interpret their physical reactions determines their success. Instead of panicking when their heart races or hands shake, they say, “This means I’m ready.” Just like a car engine warming up before a drive, those feelings are signs that your body is primed for action.

Practical Tips for Handling Pressure

  • Reframe Your Feelings: Recognize nervousness as a signal that you care and that you’re ready to perform at your best. It’s a natural response--not a sign of weakness.
  • Regulate Your Arousal: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try calming techniques. Step away if you can, take a deep breath, close your eyes and visualize someone who supports you unconditionally. Use a calming word or mantra—perhaps a reminder that you’ve done the work to get here or a simple hum—to centre yourself.
  • Boost Your Energy: On the other hand, if you’re feeling flat or unmotivated, energize yourself with movement. Do a quick burst of physical activity—jumping jacks, sprints up the stairs, or even a primal shout. Get your blood pumping and your mind focused.
  • Find Your Optimal Zone: Peak performance happens when you find the right balance of excitement and focus. Learn to recognize and adjust your arousal to enter your personal ‘zone.’

Applying This Beyond the Pitch

The lessons from the World Cup aren’t just for athletes. Whether you’re making a pitch to your boss, giving a big presentation, or stepping onto a stage, you can apply the same principles. The key is not to eliminate nerves but to embrace and manage them effectively. By reframing how you interpret your readiness and what you say to yourself, you can transform arousal into an asset.

So, the next time you feel that surge of nerves before a big moment—remember, it means you’re ready to rise to the occasion. Like any World Cup star or Olympian, you have what it takes to perform at your best. Trust your preparation, find your zone and give it everything you’ve got.
